History
Prior to the events of Zenless Zone Zero, Jack was the mentor to a young Von Lycaon, teaching him the art of thievery. After coming across Hugo Vlad, a young noble who had recently ran away from his home and abusive family, Jack took him under his wing, feeding the two, despite having little income; and teaching Hugo valuable life lessons and how to be a phantom thief. Jack also explained to them the injustice of the world and how they should strive to bring fairness to the world whilst not judging the lives of others' or taking life, believing it to be sacred.[3]
Sometime during his later years, Jack had been diagnosed with an unknown illness, which he kept a secret to his two students, and continued to go on heists with them, even though he was unable to keep up with them.[4] Before his death, Jack spoke with Lycaon privately. He explained how despited Hugo being a gifted child, he would draw his power from evil due to a curse that ran in his lineage - a curse that fate branded him with. He warned Lycoan about the "seed of evil" inside of Hugo, that he must not let it take root and ensure the noble-blooded student doesn't go down a path of evil, even if it means having to "choke" him.[5] Unbeknowst to both of them, Hugo had overheard the entire conversation, leading to him feeling confused about himself.[6]
Sometime after his private chat with Von Lycaon, Jack sucummbed to his illness, passing away peacefully in his sleep. He had left instructions for Lycaon and Hugo to follow after his death and was buried somewhere in the Outer Ring.[Note 1]
