zenless zone zero

Array Mode, also known as the Monitor Array, or TV Mode, refers to a Game System in Zenless Zone Zero that was initially omni-present across various game modes, whereby the player explored Hollows by traversing through an array of TV screens, encountering various Hollow Events. Since Version 1.2, it has been gradually phased-out.[1]

General

Within the Monitor Array a player controls their avatar which appears as a monochrome Bangboo. Movement for all entities within the Monitor Array is restricted to four directions, namely up, down, left and right, with no diagonal movement possible. Movement is limited to only one block at a time, though certain special blocks may allow for more advanced movement.

Moving into a block constitutes as one "turn", which is counted by the game to determine certain special events and functions such as timed bombs.

Special tiles known as Events are a major part of exploration within the Monitor Array, which are activated simply by moving the avatar or another object onto the block said event occupies. Events offer a multitude of different functions that can be beneficial or harmful to the player's avatar or other entities within the Array.

Many commissions feature Monitor Arrays that shift their arrangement in response to either a story event or an activated Event tile, and some like Hollow Zero: Withered Domain feature commissions whose arrangement and event composition are procedurally-generated.

Bangboo Plug-Ins

Bangboo Plug-Ins are items which can be activated within the Monitor Array to perform a special function. Some plug-ins provide passive buffs and special abilities that remain active throughout the commission, while others require players to manually activate them to benefit from their effects.

History

Upon the launch of the game in Version 1.0, the vast majority of H.D.D.-based Story Commissions and Exploration Commissions, alongside Hollow Zero: Withered Domain, featured "Array Mode", which refers to exploring Hollows through the "TV Screens", moving tile-by-tile and encountering various Hollow Events. In Version 1.2, it was decided that Array Mode would no longer feature in Story Commissions going forward, and would later be replaced by something else. In Version 1.4, the vast majority of pre-existing Story Commissions were reworked, with Array Mode being replaced in favour of "Marcel Maze" gameplay (aka "Eous Gameplay").

Instead of being completely removed, the older versions of the Story Commissions featuring Array Mode were moved under a toggleable UI switch, allowing players to experience them as they were upon launch, if they so chose. Certain commissions that were not reworked, or could not be reworked, were instead re-labelled to be [Story: Array] in the H.D.D.
