Agents are obtainable and playable units in Zenless Zone Zero.
They come in different Ranks ( or ), are aligned with an Attribute (Physical, Fire, Ice, Electric, Ether, or Wind) or Special Attribute (Honed Edge, Frost, Auric Ink), have a combat Specialty (Attack, Stun, Anomaly, Support, Defense, or Rupture), use one or more Attack Types (Slash, Strike, Pierce), are equipable with a W-Engine and six Drive Discs, and belong to a Faction.

How to Obtain

Agents are primarily obtained through Signal Search.
There are two channels to search for new agents:

• Exclusive Channel, which features time-limited Agent searches.
• Stable Channel, which is always available.

Searches can be performed with special Currency, notably Encrypted Master Tape for the Exclusive Channel and Master Tape for the Stable Channel, or they can be performed directly by either using Polychrome ×160, or by converting the premium paid-only currency Monochrome at a 1-to-1 ratio.

Alternate ways of obtaining Agents also exist:

• Phaethon's Story
  •  Anby Demara,  Billy Kid and  Nicole Demara are obtained for free after completing the Prologue Business x Strangeness x Justness.
  •  Pyrois is obtained for free by completing A Sleepwalker's Confession.
• Stable Channel Additional Recruitment
  • After completing 300 searches on the Stable Channel: Star-Studded Cast, the player is able to obtain an -Rank Agent of their choice, out of the following options:
    •  Alexandrina Sebastiane
    •  Grace Howard
    •  Koleda Belobog
    •  Nekomiya Mana
    •  Soldier 11
    •  Von Lycaon
• Signal Shop
  • One -Rank Agent is available to purchase each month from the Signal Shop through a selectable A-Rank signal in exchange for Residual Signal ×140. This can be any A-Rank Agent, as long as they were not released in the current version.
• Permanent Events
  •  Ben Bigger is available as the final reward from the Rookie on the Road Event.
  •  Soukaku is available from the Eridu Frontier Event, after the player has completed Shiyu Defense Stable Node: Third Frontier
• Limited-Time Events
  •  Luciana de Montefio was available from the Overlord's Feast event.
  •  Asaba Harumasa was available from the 2024 Special Visitor event.
  •  Pulchra Fellini was available from the March On, Tiny Titan! event.
  •  Komano Manato was available from the When Dreams Remain Unfinished event.
  •  Zhao was available from the 2025 Special Visitor event.
• Special Invitation Letter
  • Once a player has obtained the same S-Rank Agent for the 8th time or more from Signal Searches, they will be awarded a Special Invitation Letter, which can be used to redeem one of the following:
    • Any of the 6 Standard S-Rank units (Alexandrina Sebastiane, Grace Howard, Koleda Belobog, Nekomiya Mana, Soldier 11, Von Lycaon)
    •  Burnice White
    •  Jane Doe
    •  Qingyi

Progression

Leveling

Agents will only gain EXP by using Agent EXP Material. The amount of materials required increases per level and promotion.

Promotions

Once an Agent has hit the level-cap for their current promotion level, they can be promoted, which will increase the maximum level they can achieve, the maximum skill level they can achieve, while also providing a bonus to the base stats of HP, ATK and DEF.
The maximum promotion level is dependant on the player's Inter-Knot Level, up to a maximum of 5 promotions and Agent level 60 at Inter-Knot Level 50.
The type and amount of Agent Promotion Material and Denny required to promote, can be seen in the promotion popup-menu, visible on the agent selection menu (PC: C) when an Agent is ready to be promoted.

Protagonist Agents

When the player starts the game for the first time, they will be prompted to choose one of the siblings Belle or Wise to play as. Thereafter, the other sibling will become a non-playable character who acts as the player's assistant.

Protagonist Agents are unable to participate in combat, and thus do not have a Rank, Attribute, Specialty, the ability to equip W-Engines and Drive Discs, and more, with the only similar thing they share with normal Agents being Agent Outfits.
