Any Agent can equip a given W-Engine, however only those whose specialty matches the engine can use its W-Engine Effect. Only one W-Engine can be equipped to an agent at a time, accessible from the Equipment Menu.
Each W-Engine has both a Main Stat and Sub Stat, with the Main Stat typically being Base ATK, while the Sub Stat will typically be valuable to agents of the corresponding specialty. Furthermore, each W-Engine also comes with a W-Engine Effect, which provides a passive bonus to the equipped Agent during gameplay.
Enhancing (read: leveling-up) a W-Engine increases its Main Stat, while the Sub Stat will only be increased after Modification (read: promoting/ascending). The W-Engine Effect can also be improved by Overclocking (read: refining/limit-breaking) the W-Engine to its next Phase, using duplicate copies obtained through Signal Searches.
W-Engines can come in 3 rarities, with each higher rarity offering better stats and passives, but also requiring more resources to Modify.
W-Engines can be obtained by performing Signal Searches, which can be accessed through the Main Menu or by pressing the F4 key (PC only).
Rank W-Engines can also be crafted at Box Galaxy on Sixth Street, requiring the usage of different amounts of W-Engine Chip, depending on the rarity of the desired W-Engine.
The level of a W-Engine can be enhanced with W-Engine EXP Materials, increasing its Main Stat. The cost to do increases with the Rank of the W-Engine. While enhancing, any excess EXP granted by used materials is refunded as lower tier materials.
Every 10 levels, a W-Engine must be modified in order to continue enhancing it. Doing so also increases its Main and Sub Stats. Modifying a W-Engine costs a varying amount of both Dennies and its Specialty-specific Component, depending on the rarity of the W-Engine.

Overclocking
A duplicate W-Engine can be used to overclock the same W-Engines. Doing so enhances the W-Engine Effect.
Every Agent has their own Exclusive W-Engine with the same rank as them. After equipping an Exclusive W-Engine, the player can activate the W-Engine switch in the Agent's Equipment Menu. The switch can be freely toggled On/Off when out of combat. When turned on, the Agent will display unique visual effects in combat.
Trivia
Etymology
The "W" in W-Engine may stand for "Weapon," as Anby literally states that they are weapons,[1] although the most probable reading is "Wave", for soundwave; the latter would be in line with the Chinese meaning.
Additionally, it is said that "soundwaves can protect against corruption."[2]
The Chinese name for W-Engines, 音擎Yīnqíng, is a portmanteau for 音yīn, "sound" and 引擎yǐnqíng, "engine".
